Here are some resources, ideas and activities for teaching data.

  • BBC KS1 Bitesize has a good but very short activity called Animal Island Data (probably would take a year 1 student about 5 mins)
  • Scootle has an EQ activity called Lolly graphs that is also very short
  • TES iBoard has another very short "Alien Snail Racing" activity where students read data off a graph
  • ABS has a range of activities around data as part of their Education Services data page (but mostly for high school)
  • There are some Scootle resources suitable for Year 1 from MAWA "Sorting animals" and "Most common pet"
  • kidsmathgamesonline.com has an excellent guided activity/game "Math Data Game" where you collect data, record it, and turn it into a column graph or a pictogram. Several different questions available so this activity could last more than a few minutes.
  • A similar activity is on the learnalberta.ca site called "Math 3 Under the Sea"
  • BBC has a similar one to Math Data Game, called "Data Picking" that is a little more complicated, although much the same concept, it doesn't have as much guidance.
  • Mathwire.com has a "Data Analysis and Probability Games" page with a large list of games, some with a probability theme.

Teaching Sequence for one week of data

Here is a very rough guide to looking at data for a week in year 1. Clearly these are not full lesson plans, just a guide and still a work in progress! Some capabilities are expected from Kindergarten, e.g. making and counting tallies.
  • Day 1 - introduce vocabulary: data, statistics, collecting, analysing, graph, tables, columns, rows. Do a simple table of data using tally marks (teach tally marks again if required)
  • Day 2 - Collect data on a simple topic, e.g. number of letters in students names, and do simple analysis
  • Day 3 - make a graph together for instance, birthdays in each month, using names. Also possibly do a graph of favourite animals, again using student names. (Schoolcentre.com.au has a good template for this in "221 Favourite Animals"
  • Day 4 - Analysing/interpreting data in some provided sheets, I used Go Maths year 1 paces and grab graphs.
  • Day 5 - Possibly do some of the computer based activities above.
